The idea for establishing Husky Rescue Eastern Cape was born from the passion I have developed for these amazing dogs, which started with my first Husky Snowy, who I rescued from standing in the middle of a busy road in Walkerville, south of Johannesburg. Snowy taught me that I had a lot to learn about Huskies, and this is how I came to love the breed.
We decided to relocate to Hogsback, Eastern Cape, where my plan was to establish a venue where people could come and stay, with their Huskies, and enjoy walks and dry-land sledding in the magnificent forests surrounding the village. Just as I was starting to gain momentum, Covid struck, and of course I had to close the accomodation. When travel and accomodation was allowed again, I was not able to regain what I had before the lockdowns, and ended up closing the accomodation.
After a brief period in Kzn, I located back to Eastern Cape, to the farm where I currently rent a house, with enough space for my Husky pack, which, over the few years I have been in Eastern Cape, has really grown. I currently have 8 Huskies, as well as some mixed breed doggies, some of whom have been with me for a long time. They may not be Huskies, but certainly join in when there’s howling to be done – it’s as well that I’m on a farm!
The idea for a rescue was given further impetus by a friend, also in rescue, from who I had adopted Blue, a beautiful young male with the most mesmerising blue eyes, rescued from a township. She suggested starting my own Husky Rescue, as there is a need for both a sanctuary in the Eastern Cape, as well as a need to educate and inform people.
I had to regroup a fair bit after being through 2 major moves, with 14 dogs, in a little over 6 months. But little by little, the idea for the rescue has been growing, to the point where we are now actively starting to get it up and running. The rescue is now a registered NPC, so we can now move forward.
My primary goal is to raise enough funds to enable the NPC to buy it’s own property. Then we intend to use it to become self-sustaining, in terms of income generating activities. One goal is to get local Husky owners together, form a club, to really enjoy what these amazing dogs can do, with their natural ability to run and pull. Lots of fun, laughter, waving tails, goofy grins and excitement are being planned, so keep watching social media, and the blogs here on the site!
